Tarot decks (30 Day Tarot Challenge)
Ree over at Wisps of Stardust on Tumblr created a 30 Day Tarot Challenge, to which I will be responding over the next month.
Today's question: Do you have more than one deck that you use, and, if so, do you have a favorite? If not, why do you like the deck you have chosen?
I only have one deck at present! I am learning on The Witches Tarot by Ellen Dugan and Mark Evans. I use it for readings, spellwork, and meditation. I also play solitaire with it (a tip I learned on Aeclectic's forum. It really helps you become more familiar with the cards!) I had a mini-Celtic tarot deck for the past five or so years, but the artwork didn't really resonate with me, so I passed it along to a friend who is involved in Gaelic reconstructionist polytheism. Now that I have a deck that is more aesthetically and philosophically pleasing to me, I am much more interested in learning and doing readings.
I like this deck because it is gorgeous, rich in symbolism, and designed by a witch for witches (specifically those of a Neo-Wiccan bent. Though I identify as a pagan Unitarian witch, I came to paganism through Neo-Wicca, and I am comfortable with that mythology as presented in this deck.) Judgment and the Devil, concepts that don't really fit my world view, are transformed into Karma (which is problematic) and the Shadow Side, which are more in tune with how I view the world. The book that accompanies the deck also has a pagan worldview, so it just seems to fit my outlook better than a RWS deck.
I also really like that the back of the deck shows reversals (since the image on the back of the cards is pink at the top and blue at the bottom.) I prefer not to read reversals, and it is very easy to make sure that I shuffle in a way that avoids reversed cards.
