Day 22: Have there been types of witchcraft you’ve explored but in the end rejected?
This post is part of a 31 Days of Secular Witchcraft series in which I answer questions about my own personal views about magic and witchcraft. I urge you to answer the same questions, found here, on your own blog.
I can't say there's anything I explored with any depth that I wouldn't do again. So, I will just list some of my personal witchcraft no-no's.
I started out doing very New Age, popular "Wicca" type magic, and I have since expanded my view of what magic can be.
I've read about ceremonial magic, and I'm really not a fan for myself personally, but scant reading was the extent of my exploration. Ditto for chaos magic. I want to learn more because I am a major bibliophile, but that's not a path I feel myself drawn toward.
I was interested in voodoo as a child, but I have never actually done anything and I have nothing to do with it now. Not because there's anything wrong with voodoo, but I feel that I have no business interfering in that religion as a cultural outsider.
I have nothing to do with fairies or trickster deities. I have a classroom full of tweens, a cat, and a feisty spouse, so there is an abundance of impish energy in my life already. Ditto for beings like Lucifer, Satan, Loki, and so on.
I don't call on the Abrahamic god in spells because many of his followers might perceive that as disrespectful to their own belief system. My mom, for one, and I respect her beyond measure. Ditto for Mary, Jesus, and the saints. There are people who carefully and thoughtfully do so (see all syncretic religions ever plus others), and I respect them, but I don't do it in my own practice. Sometimes I mention "the gods of my ancestors" which of course includes that god, but I only say things like, "I recognize and honor the gods of my ancestors who wish me well," and I don't actually pull them in by name.
I don't have anything to do with dragons. I dig dragons in art, literature, and world cultures, but I don't feel comfortable "summoning" or working with a creature like that without more research and a personal relationship. Ditto for angels.
I'm sure there's more. I hope that people don't feel hurt by this post. I assure you that I know that other people do the things I don't, and somehow the world continues to rotate on its axis and orbit the sun. I don't want to rain on anyone's magical parade or be disrespectful.
