My introduction to tarot (Day 1 of the 30 Day Tarot Challenge)

Ree over at Wisps of Stardust on Tumblr created a 30 Day Tarot Challenge, to which I will be responding over the next month.

When I was younger, my dad had a "debunking the occult" themed program that he performed for local church groups.  In order to properly research, he had tarot cards and all kinds of interesting books on the occult.  (Part of me thinks that he is very intuitive and could sense that I had become involved in Neo-Wicca.)  In any case, I flipped through his cards, a traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck, and found them ugly and not very useful.

A friend gave me The Goddess Tarot for a birthday one year in high school, and those "clicked" with me.  I never became a very good reader because I was scared to practice and kept the cards wedged between my mattress and box spring.

I recently decided to start reading cards again four years ago, but only dabbling.  I bought a new deck this summer, The Witches Tarot by Ellen Dugan and Mark Evans, and have begun studying more seriously now.
