Day 5: How do you see/define magic? Do you use magic?
In response to Allec's 31 Days of Secular Witchcraft.
I would love for someone more knowledgeable and articulate than I to answer that question and submit their thoughts to Cross Quarterly.
When someone uses indirect means to manifest a change, I perceive that as magic. If you go on a job interview, that is a direct way of acquiring a job. That is not magic to me. If you chant over a bag of herbs and carry that bag with you to the interview, that is an indirect way to acquire a job. That is magic to me. If you drink chamomile tea to manifest calm in yourself, that is both direct and indirect, and I am inclined to say that it is magic if you perceive it as magic.
Yes, I use magic. I love it.
The question I want to pose is, "where is the line between prayer and magic?" If a Christian prays before an interview, he/she would not perceive that as magic. A Catholic could wear a scapular and not perceive that as a magical item the way my spiral ring is perceived as magical by me.
Again, I'd love to hear what others have to say about this question.
